The earliest usages of the word “lead” were in reference to travel, “To bring or take a person to a place.” Therefore, a “leader” was one who was tasked with safely bringing people from one destination to another.

In a world where we confuse management for leadership, our organizational well-being and performance depend on our ability to reflect on and revive a more original notion of what it means to lead. Nothing impacts the total organizational culture more than those who are responsible for safely bringing colleagues from one destination to another. Consequently, the guiding ethos behind the leadership retreat is the belief that leadership is the practice of regarding and empowering the humanity and self-efficacy of others as you walk with them toward their goals. In short, leaders can’t escape the fact that leadership requires more than possessing knowledge and skill; it requires leading with who you are.
